Ministers cannot interfere in the markings of the government exams - PM Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said at present the country has transformed into an era in which the language is pronounced in a uniform manner, without differentiating as per the various areas. Speaking at the ceremony of awarding appointments for translators held at Temple Trees yesterday (5) he said that ministers are not in a position to change the marks of Government exams and now we have transformed into a period of pronouncing the language equally without being differentiating as per the various areas. The Prime Minister stated that since our country consists of a population that uses two mother tongues, we should be more attentive regarding the translations. All of you have been recruited to the translators service, subject to the trainings and on the basis of an exam held by the Department of Examinations. The translations service is of extreme importance to the economy, public service and in ordinary life of the people. Sinhala language differs in the Southern province to some other provinces. Most probably youth is not attentive on this issue. Even in Tamil language, the pronunciation differs as per the areas in provinces such as Eastern province, Northern province and the Central province. Thus the pronunciation in the contemporary society has transformed into a uniform position. All the government offices should consist of officers who possess the skill of translation. If any shortage exists in this field we are liable to fill this gap as the Ministry of Public Administration. But ministers are not in a capacity to interfere in examinations.
